The Opportunities for the Development of the Pineapple Industry on Eleuthera project sought to assess the current condition of the Bahamian pineapple industry on Eleuthera with a view to identifying challenges and opportunities from growth and export throughout the industry’s value-chain that could affect the strategic development of the industry.

• Primary Production Capacity: 500,000 plants/fruits (approximate)
• Cultivar: Native Sugar Loaf
• Length of Production Season: 12-18 Months
• Value-Added Products: Pineapple Jam/Jelly, Chutney, Juice.
• Value-added Production Quantity: 5280 Fruits per season (Approximately 1% of
  total production).

The Pine Islands Project – Component 3: Socio-economic Impact Assessment on Silver Top Palm on Sustainable Livelihoods in Red Bays and Central Andros.

Component 3 of the project aims to address economic activity in Red Bays North and Central Andros, by collecting information on silver top palm use and dependence in line with specific sustainable development goals (SDG) to determine the island’s baseline socio-economic conditions, with a focus on gender, age, economic status, and resource use.

Project Highlights:

• Red Bays: 
  • o 34% of homes indicated that the availability of silver top palm has decreased
    over the years.
  • o 16% of homes in Red Bays do not have electricity, 18% do not have running
    water, 14% do not have potable water (drinking water) and 32% do not have
    internet access.
• Central Andros:
  • o 71% of households surveyed believe that the availability of silver top palm
    has decreased over the years.
  • o 100% of homes surveyed had access to basic amenities except for the internet (43% did not have internet access)
